The Nit House Nurse - What to Expect

Finding lice can make even the calmest person want to wash every blanket they own, bag up half the house, and start Googling things they absolutely should not be Googling.

You don’t need to do any of that before I arrive.

There’s no need to deep-clean your house, treat your furniture, or panic-buy every lice product on the pharmacy shelf. Just leave the detective work to me. I’ll take a look at what’s actually going on, explain what I find, and we’ll decide what needs to happen from there.

No judgment. No embarrassment. And absolutely no need to apologize for your house, your kids, or the fact that somebody may have tiny freeloaders living in their hair. 😂

Before I Arrive 🌰

Good news! You don’t need to do much. Please don’t treat the hair with lice medication, oils, or other products right before your appointment unless we’ve already discussed it.

Hair can be clean or a little dirty. Just have it dry, detangled, and free of heavy styling products if possible. If your child has braids, twists, or another style that prevents me from thoroughly accessing the scalp and hair, it may need to be taken down before the appointment.

And please don’t worry about cleaning your entire house before I get there. Head lice live on people, not houses. We’ll talk about the few things at home that are actually worth doing if lice are confirmed.

If other members of the household have been exposed, it’s helpful to have them available for a quick check too. Finding out who actually has lice is one of the best ways to avoid passing it right back and forth.

When I Arrive 🌰

We’ll start by talking through what you’ve noticed, who may have been exposed, and any treatments or products you’ve already tried. Then I’ll take a careful look at the hair and scalp to figure out what we’re actually dealing with.

If lice are found, I’ll show you what I’m seeing and explain what it means. We’ll talk through your options, determine the treatment price based on hair length and density, and confirm any applicable fees before I begin treatment.

If you decide to move forward, I’ll get to work with careful, section-by-section combing and manual removal of lice and nits. I’m meticulous for a reason. The goal isn’t to rush through your head. It’s to clear it. 🪮

And if I don’t find evidence of head lice? I’ll tell you that too. I’m not going to sell you a treatment you don’t need.

During Treatment 🌰

Get comfortable. We may be here for a little while. Thorough lice and nit removal takes patience, and I’d much rather take the time to do it carefully than rush through someone’s hair just to finish faster.

I’ll work through the hair in small sections, carefully combing and manually removing lice and nits as I go. Treatment time varies depending on hair length, density, tangles, and the extent of the infestation, but your price isn’t based on the clock.

For kids, comfort comes first. Snacks, tablets, movies, favorite shows, toys, and the occasional wiggle break are absolutely welcome. If they need a minute, we’ll take a minute. No child is going to be held down or forced through a treatment they’re struggling to tolerate.

You’re welcome to ask questions along the way, too. I’ll explain what I’m finding, what matters, and what you actually need to worry about afterward.

My job is to get the lice out. Your job is mostly to sit there and let me be weirdly excited about combing through hair. 😂

After Treatment 🌰

Before I leave, we’ll talk through what I found, what to expect next, and the few things you should do at home. You will not be handed a terrifying 47-step cleaning checklist. 😂 Head lice are a people problem, not a house problem.

We’ll also talk about anyone else who may have been exposed and how to reduce the chances of passing lice back and forth. If something needs your attention over the next couple of weeks, I’ll make sure you know what to look for.

Every full treatment includes 14 days of complimentary virtual follow-up support. If you find something suspicious, have a question, or just need someone to look at a picture and tell you “What the heck is this thing?” Send it my way. Phone, text, photos, and video are all fair game.

If you’d feel better having me come back and put actual eyes on things, in-home rechecks are available at standard mobile screening rates.

Most importantly, you’re not getting handed a comb and a “good luck!” on my way out the door. I’ll make sure you understand what comes next and I’ll be there if you need help. 🌰

-A Note About Kids 💛

Kids are allowed to be kids here. They don’t have to sit perfectly still, stay completely quiet, or pretend having someone comb through their hair is their idea of a fantastic afternoon. 😂

I’ll work at a pace your child can reasonably tolerate, explain what I’m doing in an age-appropriate way, and take breaks when they need them. Tablets, movies, snacks, comfort items, and whatever else helps them settle in are absolutely welcome.

I will never force or restrain a child to complete a treatment. If your child becomes too uncomfortable or overwhelmed to continue safely, we’ll stop, regroup, and figure out the best next step.

A little patience goes a long way, and there is zero judgment here for wiggling, whining, crying, needing seventeen snack breaks, or asking “Are you done yet?” approximately every 45 seconds. 🤣

The goal is to get the lice out without making the experience scarier than it needs to be. 🌰
