First, don’t panic. Lice happens. 🌰

Head lice are incredibly annoying, but they’re also manageable. And despite what your suddenly-itchy scalp may be telling you, finding lice does not mean your family is dirty, your house is dirty, or you’ve done anything wrong.

There’s also a lot of misinformation about lice floating around, which can make an already stressful situation feel even worse. So let’s separate the facts from the panic.

Below you’ll find answers to some of the questions I hear most often, without the scare tactics, unnecessary cleaning frenzy, or internet rabbit holes. 🐇

How do I know if it’s actually lice?

The most reliable sign of an active head lice infestation is finding a live, crawling louse. Lice are tiny. Adults are only about the size of a sesame seed, and they move quickly through the hair.

Nits (lice eggs) are tiny, oval structures that are firmly attached to one side of the hair shaft. Unlike dandruff, lint, or many other things commonly mistaken for nits, they don’t simply brush or flake away.

And itching alone doesn’t mean lice! Some people with lice don’t itch at all, especially early in an infestation. During a first infestation, itching can take 4–6 weeks to develop.

If you’re staring at something in the hair thinking, “Is that a nit... or is my child just covered in crumbs?” 😂 That’s exactly what a professional head check is for.

What do lice and nits look like?

Adult head lice are tiny insects about 2–3 mm long, roughly the size of a sesame seed. Nymphs are smaller versions of adult lice and can be even harder to spot.

Nits are much smaller and are attached firmly to individual hair shafts. Depending on their stage and what you’re looking at, they may appear tan, brownish, yellowish, or pale/white.

One important thing to know: not every nit-looking object means there is an active infestation. Empty egg casings can remain attached to hair after lice are gone, and dandruff, hair casts, product buildup, and ordinary debris are commonly mistaken for nits.

Can lice jump or fly?

Nope! No jumping. No flying. No tiny lice Olympics. 😂

Head lice crawl. They do not have wings and they cannot hop or jump. Most transmission happens through direct hair-to-hair or head-to-head contact with someone who has lice.

That’s why lice spread so easily among children who play, cuddle, hug, pile together for pictures, have sleepovers, or otherwise spend time with their heads close together.

How do people get head lice?

Usually through direct head-to-head or hair-to-hair contact with someone who already has them. Lice are human parasites that survive by feeding on human blood.

They don’t spontaneously appear because someone’s hair is dirty, and they don’t come from your yard, your pets, or your house.

Somebody had lice. A louse crawled onto another person. And thus began the world’s least enjoyable game of tag. 😂

Does having lice mean someone is dirty?

Absolutely not.

Head lice are parasites looking for a human scalp and a blood meal. Personal cleanliness doesn’t make someone immune to lice, and finding them is not a sign of poor hygiene or a dirty home.

So please don’t be embarrassed when I show up. I’m coming to remove lice, not inspect your baseboards. 😂

Do I need to clean my entire house?

No. Please put the garbage bags down. 😂

Head lice are adapted to living and feeding on people and don’t survive long once they’re separated from a human host. The risk of getting lice from one that has fallen onto furniture, carpet, or other household surfaces is considered very small.

Focus on items the infested person recently used. Wash and dry clothing, bedding, and similar washable items used during the two days before treatment using hot water and high heat. Vacuum areas where the person frequently sat or lay. Combs and brushes can be soaked in hot water of at least 130°F for 5–10 minutes.

You do not need to fumigate your home, spray your furniture with pesticides, or conduct a three-day deep-cleaning exorcism. In fact, pesticide sprays and fogs aren’t recommended because they can be toxic.

How long can lice live away from the scalp?

Not very long!

Head lice depend on humans for food and survival, so once they’re removed from a person’s head, their survival chances aren’t exactly fantastic. 😂 Head lice can only survive for 1-2 days when they fall off a person and cannot feed.

That’s one reason the focus should be on people and hair, rather than trying to disinfect every square inch of your home.

Does everyone in the house need treatment?

Not automatically.

Everyone in the household and other close contacts should be checked, but treatment should be directed at people who are actually infested. People who share a bed with someone who has an active infestation should also be addressed at the same time.

That’s why household screening is so useful. Treating everybody “just in case” can mean unnecessary products, expense, and frustration.

Check first. Treat what actually needs treating.

Can my dog, cat, or other pet get head lice?

Nope. Leave the pets out of this one. 😂

Human head lice are adapted to humans. Dogs, cats, and other pets do not get or spread human head lice.

So there is no need to treat your dog, wash the cat in lice shampoo, or look suspiciously at the family rabbit.

Flopsy is innocent. 🐇🤣

Can lice live in bedding, couches, carpet, or stuffed animals?

A louse can occasionally end up off the head, but your couch is not secretly establishing a lice colony. 😂

Lice need a human host to feed and survive, and the risk of transmission from furniture or carpet is considered very small.

Focus your energy on recently used bedding, clothing, brushes, and the people who had close contact with the affected person. There’s no need to turn your entire home upside down.

Should my child stay home from school or daycare?

Current guidance does not support keeping otherwise healthy children out of school simply because head lice or nits are found. “No-nit” policies that require every nit to be removed before a child can return are also discouraged by major health and school-nursing organizations.

That said, individual schools and childcare centers may have their own policies, so check with yours about their requirements.

Because lice spread primarily through close head-to-head contact, it’s still important to address an active infestation promptly and avoid direct hair-to-hair contact until it has been treated.

Do nits mean someone still has active lice?

Not necessarily.

Nits and empty egg casings can remain attached to the hair even after crawling lice are gone. Nits farther away from the scalp are often old, nonviable, or already hatched. Many nits located more than about ¼ inch from the scalp are unlikely to hatch or may simply be empty casings.

That’s why finding something that looks like a nit isn’t always enough to determine whether someone currently has an active infestation.

Context matters. And ideally, we find the bug. 🔎

Can I treat lice myself?

Yes. There are over-the-counter and prescription medications for head lice, and many families successfully treat lice at home. Some products kill crawling lice but not all eggs, so a properly timed second treatment may be necessary depending on the medication used. Always follow the specific product instructions.

Where things get frustrating is figuring out whether the treatment worked, whether something is actually a nit, whether another treatment is needed, and whether every affected person has been identified.

That’s where professional screening and meticulous combing can take a whole lot of stress out of the process.

What should I NOT do if I find lice?

First: don’t panic.

Second: please don’t start combining every lice remedy you can find. More product does not mean better treatment. Using excessive amounts of lice medication, repeatedly using a medication that isn’t working, or combining different lice medications without guidance can be unsafe.

Skip pesticide sprays and foggers around the house, too. They aren’t necessary and can be harmful.

And despite generations of kitchen-cabinet folklore, there isn’t good scientific evidence that mayonnaise, olive oil, butter, margarine, or similar substances are effective lice treatments.

Basically: don’t declare chemical warfare on your child or your house. 😂

Why is my head still itching after treatment?

Itching does not automatically mean treatment failed.

Itching is an allergic reaction to lice bites, and irritation can persist even after lice have been successfully treated. Some lice medications themselves can also cause temporary itching or mild burning.

What matters more is whether live crawling lice are still present.

So if your scalp itches the second someone says the word “lice”... congratulations. You are also a human being. 😂

Can head lice spread disease?

Head lice are certainly annoying, but they are not known to transmit disease.

Excessive scratching can irritate the scalp and potentially lead to sores or a secondary skin infection, though. Significant redness, swelling, drainage, worsening pain, or other concerning scalp symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.

When should I call The Nit House Nurse? 🌰

Anytime you want another set of eyes.

Maybe you found a bug. Maybe daycare sent the email and now everybody in your house suddenly feels itchy. Maybe you’ve treated twice and still don’t know what you’re looking at. Or maybe you’re holding something under your phone flashlight at 11 PM thinking:

“Is this a nit... or is this a piece of granola bar?” 🤨😂
